Hondo was once an American guitar company and brand owned through IMC, and later Musicorp, that produced a spread of entry level to high-end acoustic guitars, electric guitars and basses with designs basically in line with those of vintage fashions such as the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul. From 1972 to 1989 the guitars have been principally produced in Korea by way of Samick, with the short-lived Professional Series being made in Japan. In 2005, the J.B. Player emblem changed the Hondo identify.

History

The Hondo guitar corporate used to be originally shaped in 1969 when Jerry Freed and Tommy Moore of the International Music Corporation (IMC) of Fort Worth, Texas, shaped a joint-venture with Korean producer Samick Company. IMC's intent used to be to introduce fashionable manufacturing techniques and American/Japanese high quality standards to the Korean guitar production business. The Hondo concept was to supply an organized product line and forged entry-level market instruments at a good market price.

By 1975, Hondo had vendors in 70 countries international, and had expanded to producing stringed tools on the time. In 1976, over 22,000 of the Bi-Centennial banjos had been sold. The company also made enhancements to the finish high quality on their merchandise, offered scalloped bracing on acoustics, and began the use of the next high quality logo of tuning machines.

Hondo was one of the vital first in a foreign country guitar builders to feature American-built DiMarzio pickups on the import instruments starting in 1978. By this year, plenty of Hondo II fashions featured designs in response to vintage American favorites. In 1979, over 790,000 Hondo instruments were bought international. In 1980, the Professional Series was introduced, that includes higher-end Japanese-made models, produced through Tokai and Matsumoku (Only the Professional Series models have been made in Japan, all different Hondos were made in Korea). These fashions have been sold till 1983, alongside the Korean lineup (which changed into the Deluxe Series in 1981). At that time, the product line consisted of 485 other fashions.

In 1985, IMC bought primary pastime in the Charvel/Jackson Company, and began dedicating more time and passion within the greater end guitar market. The Hondo trademark went into mothballs round 1989. However, Jerry Freed started the Jerry Freed International Company in 1989, and acquired the rights to the Hondo trademark in 1991. Freed began distribution of a brand new line of Hondo guitars produced in India, China and Taiwan. In 1993, the remodeled corporate was relocated to Stuart, Florida.

The Hondo Guitar Company was purchased by way of the MBT International (now Musicorp) in 1995.[1] The Hondo product line was once made over for stepped forward quality while maintaining student-friendly prices. Hondo celebrated their 25th yr of manufacturing electric guitars in 1997. Musicorp also owns and distributes J.B. Player tools which changed Hondo in 2005.
